Scanning Spectator Tickets at Your Event

Use the Competition Corner app to scan and redeem spectator tickets at the gate — the same app your team uses for athlete check-in.

If your event includes spectator tickets, you can scan and redeem them at the gate using the same Competition Corner app your team uses for athlete check-in — no separate tool, no mode switching. The app automatically detects the ticket type when scanned and surfaces the right information for your staff to act on.

What You Need

  • The Competition Corner app installed on your device (available on the App Store and Google Play)

  • An active event with spectator tickets configured

  • A camera-enabled device to scan QR codes

Orders and Individual Tickets

When a customer purchases tickets, they receive two types of QR codes:

  • Order QR code — linked to the parent order number, which may contain multiple tickets. Scanning this code shows all tickets within that order, and your staff can redeem them one by one.

  • Individual ticket QR code — linked to a single ticket with its own unique ticket number. Scanning this goes directly to that specific ticket.

For example, a customer who purchases a family pass with four tickets will have one order QR code covering all four. When scanned, the app displays each ticket within the order and shows the pagination at the top (e.g. Ticket 1 of 4) so your staff can work through and redeem each one. Alternatively, each attendee can present their own individual ticket QR code to be scanned separately.

Both approaches are valid — the app handles either.

How Scanning Works

The app uses a unified scanning flow for both athlete and spectator tickets. When you scan a QR code, the system reads it and automatically identifies whether it belongs to an athlete or a spectator — you don't need to switch between modes or know which type is coming through.

Scanning a Spectator Ticket

  1. Open the Competition Corner app and select your event.

  2. Tap the scan button to activate the camera.

  3. Point the camera at the attendee's QR code — from their phone or a printed ticket.

  4. The app will display the ticket details. If scanning an order QR code with multiple tickets, use the pagination to navigate between tickets in the order.

  5. Review the ticket to confirm it is valid and shows NOT REDEEMED.

  6. Tap Redeem to mark the ticket as used. Repeat for each ticket in the order as needed.

What You'll See on the Ticket Screen

Once scanned, the app displays a full summary of the ticket:

  • Name and email — the ticket holder's name and the email address the ticket was purchased under

  • Status — displays NOT REDEEMED if the ticket is valid and unused, or REDEEMED if it has already been scanned

  • Ticket Number — a unique identifier for this specific ticket (e.g. TIC_1Y2KF5XI2). Every ticket has its own number regardless of whether it was scanned via an order or individual QR code

  • Ticket Name — the ticket type the customer purchased (e.g. 3-Day Pass, General Admission, VIP)

  • Purchase date — when the order was placed

Redeem and Disable

At the bottom of the ticket screen, you'll see two actions:

  • Redeem — marks the ticket as used. Once redeemed, the ticket cannot be scanned again. If a guest attempts to reuse a ticket, the app will show it as already redeemed.

  • Disable — revokes the ticket entirely, preventing it from being redeemed. Use this when a customer has been refunded and you want to ensure their ticket can no longer be used for entry.

Tips for Event Day

  • Brief your volunteers — the same app and the same scan flow handles both athlete and spectator tickets. Staff only need to scan and tap Redeem regardless of what comes through.

  • Remind attendees they can share a single QR code — a group arriving together can present one order QR code and your staff can work through all tickets in the order from a single scan. Individual QR codes work just as well if attendees prefer to present their own.

  • Consider separate entry lanes — for high-volume events, separating athlete and spectator queues can keep traffic moving, even though the app handles both automatically.

  • Test before doors open — do a quick scan with a sample ticket before guests arrive to confirm your device's camera is working and your connection is live.

Troubleshooting

The QR code won't scan. Ask the guest to increase screen brightness, or try scanning a printed copy. Make sure there's adequate lighting at your entry point.

The ticket shows as REDEEMED. This ticket has already been scanned. If you believe this is an error, look up the ticket number in Tickets > Orders List to review the history.

The ticket shows as invalid or disabled. Do not redeem. Direct the guest to your registration desk or event support staff to resolve the issue.
